24 Hours in Milan

Whether you’re spending your summer or seasonal holidays visiting top destinations in Italy or stopping over for a short weekend, why not add Milan to your list? A short trip can be extremely memorable, as there are plenty of reasons to visit Milan in one day. If you are heading to Italy’s fashion and finance capital, we know you won’t miss out on staples like the Duomo and seeing Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. Here’s a full itinerary to make the most of your 24 hours in Milan.

Duomo di Milano

Why not start off your one day visit to Milan touring a castle? You’ll feel like royalty as you roam around Castello Sforzesco, one of the city’s largest landmarks with plenty to explore. This historic stop will be packed later in the day, so it’s great to catch it in a calm moment.

Once you’ve made your way through the castle, you can stroll through Parco Sempione, the largest park and green space in Milan, to your next destination: Triennale Design Museum. There’s always such an interesting mix of exhibitions here, especially during Milan Design Week. This museum reveals the modern side of Milan by entertaining events and exhibitions from arts, design, architecture, to cinema, photography, fashion, and theatre. While you could spend the whole day here discovering the stylish café, lush garden, and scenic terrace restaurant, you only have one day in Milan, so it’s time to head to lunch!

Jump on the metro to arrive at Café Gorille by lunchtime. Definitely make a reservation, as this place can pack up easily. The staff here are incredibly warm and accommodating and the menu always has fresh, delicious ingredients. Afterwards, you can take a stroll around Porta Nuova to see Stefano Boeri’s iconic Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest) and Piazza Gae Aulenti, which is considered the new and modern heart of the city.

If you’re up for a little shopping, head over to one of the most popular addresses in Milan: 10 Corso Como. You can have a scenic coffee break in their secret garden, shop top Italian and international design brands, then head upstairs to cultivate your inner artist at the design bookstore. Fondazione Sozzani has a perfectly sized exhibition space for a quick stop to view the rotating photography and art shows, such as Sarah Moon’s Time at work.

As the sun begins to set on your one day visit to Milan, take the metro from Garibaldi to Porta Genova and walk to the quaint Navigli area. You’ll find canals, bars, and restaurants in a friendly and lively ambience. Since you’re in the neighborhood, check out Mag Cafè, a well-known and inviting place for aperitivo. You can go there early or make a reservation ahead of time to assure a comfortable spot.

Once aperitivo has opened up your palate, chances are you will want to fuel up for another day of exploring and eat a pizza. Milan has its own regional dishes, from Risotto Milanese to Ossobuco, but pizza is always a classic option. There are many restaurants you can choose, but Marghe is our pick, though it does not take reservations so be prepared to wait. It’s a relaxed vibe and has exceptional quality.
